Alfie Evans and the Experts

Alfie Evans was born with a rare brain disease died after a long and gruesome series of legal battles which resulted in his life-support ending.

The 23-month-old child had an incurable degenerative brain condition and was at the center of a controversial legal battle over his treatment.

Alfie's father Tom Evans paid tribute to his young son on Facebook, writing: 'My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 2.30am.

'We are heart broken.

His parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, wanted to take their son to the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu Paediatric Hospital in Rome after doctors at the Alder Hey Children's Hospital where Alfie was held in Liverpool, northern England, said continuing treatment would be "unkind, unfair and inhumane".

"Our lives have been turned upside down by the intense focus on Alfie and his situation", Evans said Thursday outside the Liverpool hospital.

"Let us pray that every sick person might always be respected in their dignity and cared for in a manner adapted to their condition, with the concordant input of their families and loved ones, of the doctors and of other health-care workers, with great respect for life", he said during his Sunday remarks on April 15, after mentioning "little Alfie Evans".

"This has been a devastating journey for them", the hospital said.

Alfie's mother, 20-year-old Kate James, posted that she was heartbroken over Alfie's death but added, "thank you everyone for all your support".

Alfie had been in a semi-vegetative state and scans of his brain had shown that nearly all of it had been destroyed.

Alfie was admitted to Alder Hey Hospital in December 2016.

"RIP Alfie Evans. My deepest condolences to his parents, who fought so hard for their courageous little boy", Morgan tweeted. Earlier this month, Thomas Evans met with Pope Francis in Rome and asked the pontiff to see his son in Liverpool.

After being in a coma for over a year before his life-support was stopped after appeals and pleas to the judges and courts failed.

"I wish to repeat and strongly confirm that the only master of life from the beginning until the natural end is God".

Alfie was granted Italian citizenship on Monday, with the country's government saying it hoped the toddler could have an "immediate transfer to Italy". His parents also demanded from the authorities not to disconnect the child from life support.

He thanked the hospital staff "for their dignity and professionalism during what must be an incredibly hard time for them too".

His parents said that the youngster had defied doctors' expectations and they took their case to the Court of Appeal, but the application to take him overseas was rejected.

Alfie died early Saturday, five days after he was taken off life support. Hundreds of people gathered that day in the hospital and tried to storm the building.
