Israeli troops kill three protesters, injure 600 during 'riots' along Gaza border

Thousands of Gazans attend funeral of Palestinian journalist Ahmed Abu Hussein

Although it is now unclear how impactful the protests are going to be when it comes to creating a long-lasting solution to the conflict plaguing Israel and Palestine, but the large-scale protests that are happening do signify that Palestinians in Gaza are exhausted of being treated like second-class citizens by the Israeli occupation and military forces.

Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesperson for Gaza's health ministry, said Israeli forces also targeted medical service points twice with quantities of unidentified gas east of the al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.

The Palestinian representative to the United Nations on Friday urged worldwide commissions to conduct independent and transparent investigations into the recent conflict taking place along the Gaza-Israel border.

The demonstrations, entering their fifth-week, have left a total of 45 Palestinians dead, with a reported 5,500 injured.

Condemning the "brutalities and crimes against Palestinian civilians", Mansour said the Israeli forces' actions should be stopped and human rights violators be held accountable.

Hamas has denied the allegations.

"The Israeli Occupation deployed its Army, including snipers, to attack peaceful Palestinian demonstrators, including unarmed women, men and children".

The protest movement is officially independent, but has the support of Hamas.

Forty-five Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the start of what organisers have dubbed the Great March of Return on March 30, with more than 1,500 wounded.

Israel has rejected the global criticism, saying it is defending its sovereign border and accusing Gaza's Hamas leaders, who are organizing the protests, of using the crowds as cover to carry out attacks.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein on Friday called the loss of life deplorable and said a "staggering number" of injuries had been caused by live ammunition.

The protests are expected to culminate on Nakba day, May 15, the anniversary of the so-called "catastrophe" when millions of Palestinians had to flee their homes after the creation of the state of Israel.

Israel's use of live fire has drawn global criticism.

Among the wounded, 178 were shot with live ammunition on Friday while others sustained injuries from rubber-coated steel rounds, or required treatment for tear gas exposure.

The letter to Guterres describes the "horrific casualty figures" as "the predictable outcome of the manifestly illegal rules of engagement implemented during the demonstrations, of ordering soldiers to use lethal gunfire against unarmed demonstrators who pose no mortal danger". Others threw rocks and rolled burning tires toward the fence. IDF soldiers opened fire, killing three and wounding hundreds. A van mounted with loudspeakers followed the truck with chants and applause. With hooks and a long rope, the activists pulled at parts of the barbed wire adjacent to the fence. The blockade has gutted Gaza's economy.
