Jason Witten plans to retire, join Monday Night Football

TODAY Sports

Despite veteran tight end Jason Witten potentially being on the brink of retirement, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday that the organization doesn't have to draft a tight end on Day 3 of the 2018 National Football League draft. Owner Jerry Jones says Witten was taking the weekend to consider his future and hadn't made a decision. With one more season, Witten would be the most tenured Dallas Cowboy of all-time with 16 seasons under his pads.

"He has some things to think about and discuss with his family from a professional perspective", Jones said. "He also told me that those things are going to require a few more days of consideration, at least through the weekend". No decision has been made yet about is future, but it will be interesting to see how he does in the both. We have no announcement at this time.

The New York Post first reported last week that Witten had come in to ESPN for an audition. "I'll keep the details of those discussions private forever".

On Friday afternoon Jerry Jones read a prepared statement with some ad-lib about where the team stands with Witten.

Witten, 35, has played in the National Football League for an almost-unheard-of 15 seasons.

"Oh, I'm back", he told reporters when asked about the possibility of retirement following Dallas' season finale.

"I know our relationship and I know it's for TV. I'll keep the details of those discussions private forever", Jones said.

You could have given me a fair number of guesses about what the biggest Cowboys conversation of Day 2 would be. I'll take it one day at a time.

He has the second-most receptions by a tight end in National Football League history and fourth-most overall. The Cowboys don't now have a young prospect at the position expected to push for a larger role in 2018, though that could change this offseason.

Last spring, Witten inked a four-year contract extension through the 2021 season.
