Leeds United face backlash from fans after latest announcement regarding pre-season

Leeds United fans celebrate after the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road

Britain's opposition Labour Party's Shadow Minister for Sport, Rosena Allin-Khan, said on her official Twitter account she had written to Leeds urging the club to cancel the planned tour.

LEEDS, England (AP) - English soccer club Leeds has announced a tour next month in Myanmar, where the United Nations has described the country's treatment of Rohingya Muslims as ethnic cleansing.

The military has razed villages, killed men and abused women and children, resulting in more than 700,000 people fleeing over the border to Bangladesh.

Radrizzani said he was aware of the "serious issues" in the country but that it was a "beautiful place filled with incredibly warm and welcoming people".

The team is scheduled to compete against the Myanmar national side and a select league club in two fixtures in May, following the conclusion of the English domestic season. I sincerely hope you will reconsider your post-season tour'. "We will go to Myanmar to share the famous values and ethos of Leeds United Football Club", Radrizzani concluded.

A statement from the Leeds United Supporters' Trust said the tour was "a odd and controversial choice, given the risky political climate Myanmar now finds itself in", but welcomed reassurances from the club about the safety of travelling fans.

Andrea Radrizzani, the Italian businessman who became the full owner of Leeds past year, even suggested the tour may be beneficial in raising awareness of what the United Nations has called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Amnesty International was quick to criticise the move. "They must rethink it, history will judge them to be on the wrong side of this".

The Myanmar military and government, including de facto leader, the Nobel prize victor Aung San Suu Kyi, have denied responsibility for the violence but recently the top United Nations human rights official called for Myanmar to be referred to the.

"It certainly seems like an odd choice of country to choose to tour", said its United Kingdom director Kate Allen.

"The previous year has seen the human rights situation in Myanmar deteriorate dramatically".

Myanmar denies accusations its military crackdown constitutes ethnic cleansing.

AYA bank is owned by the Myanmar tycoon Zaw Zaw, who was blacklisted by the USA for being a crony of the former military regime. "Far too often sporting events have been used as a cheap PR tool to 'sportswash" the stain of a country's human rights record'.

"They have ambitious goals for grass-roots and elite football development that we're delighted to be able to support".
