Mitchell scores 33, Jazz rout Thunder 113-96

Sparks fly despite hefty Jazz lead vs. Thunder

While Russell Westbrook grabbed headlines with previous comments, make no mistake: This opening-round series is a matter of the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. the Utah Jazz, not Westbrook vs. Ricky Rubio.

It's a quick turnaround now for both teams, with the Thunder needing to win three straight games in order to win this series, starting at home at Chesapeake Energy Arena on Wednesday night. But Utah took control with a strong second period, and led 58-52 aft halftime.

The teams had to be separated midway through the fourth quarter when Jazz centre Rudy Gobert claimed he was struck in the genitals by Thunder guard Raymond Felton.

Paul George scored 32 points to lead the Thunder, with Russell Westbrook adding 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Four technical fouls were whistled in the first half alone - two on each side - as the officials tried to keep a lid on things before they got out of hand. Oklahoma City lost its third straight in the series after shooting just 39 percent from the field.

Mitchell's point total was the highest in a playoff game by a Jazz rookie in franchise history. (Abnormal.) Missed calls are a part of the game of basketball, but it's clear that no Jazz player was close enough to Westbrook to even be in a position to foul him. "Let's get past that".

Mitchell set a postseason rookie scoring record for the Jazz, passing Karl Malone, who had 31 points on April 20, 1986, against the Mavericks.

Mitchell's 110 points thus far in the series has the rookie in rarified air with His Airness.

Chris Paul scored 25 points, Eric Gordon had 18 and Trevor Ariza, who kept the cold-shooting Rockets afloat with 11 first-quarter points, chipped in 15. "We're in it for the fight", George said.

"I think we came out a little flatter than last game". On the other end of the floor, the Jazz was able to turn the corner more effectively and get playmaking and passing from all five spots on the floor.
