Nintendo names new CEO after Switch success

As part of a new release of financial information by Nintendo, today we learned how many Switch consoles have been sold to date. These results buoyed sales of the Switch, with sales topping 15.05 million consoles for the period, beating its revised projection by just over one million. The handheld has now sold 72.53 million units life-to-date. It launched this month "Labo" LEGO-style accessories for the Switch console that users can build themselves on cardboard sheets - a step analysts said could attract a younger audience raised on smartphone gaming.

The company also provided the specific sales numbers for its first-party games, with 9 games being detailed. All up, 63.51 million software units were sold during the fiscal year. The installed base reached 17.79 million and the company forecast this to grow to 20 million by the end of March 2019. Broken down it sold 7.0 million in Japan and 5.01 million units overseas. The Switch has already outsold the Wii U's lifetime sales of 13.56 million. The Mario brand continues to sell like hot cakes, which is apparent considering that they have two Mario-themed games sitting near the 10-million-units-sold mark. We're also inclined to include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (8.5 million) on this list, simply because it might as well have been an exclusive given how few people out there own Wii Us. Profits skyrocketed too - $177.5 billion yen in 2017 ($1.5 billion U.S.) up 505 percent from $29.3 billion yen ($270 million U.S.) the year prior.

"We will develop the company to its fullest", said Furukawa, according to a Bloomberg report.

Overall software sales for 3DS this fiscal year totaled 35.64 million units.

In total, Nintendo earned $1.6 billion Dollars in profit in 2017. Ordinary profit was ¥199.3 billion ($1.82 billion). But those changes won't take place, nor will Furukawa become president, until Nintendo's shareholders and board vote in late June.
