Ovechkin: 'I can't wait' to meet Penguins in playoffs once again

Welcome back Carter Rowney

One of the trademarks of Washington Capitals playoff hockey is a complete lack of timely goals. While the Capitals might not be as strong as they were a year ago they are still a good team that has the offensive fire power to beat the Penguins. But by now we know the Penguins win on the backs of their biggest three stars (Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel), who they sometimes spread across three lines, and the deadline addition of Derick Brassard gives Pittsburgh its best 1-2-3 punch down the middle since Jordan Staal left in 2012. Overtime followed and Panarin grabbed the game victor. The Penguins, meanwhile, were having a hard time closing out the Flyers until Jake Guentzel exploded onto the scene with four goals in the second half of Game 6. From Friday through Sunday, they won playoff games on three consecutive days at home for the first time in their shared history.

Game four started horrendously for the Jackets as they fell 3-0 down early in the third period.

If the Stanley Cup playoffs were reseeded after the first round, the Penguins (100 points) would have faced the Tampa Bay Lightning (113 points), while the Capitals (105 points) would have faced the victor of the Boston Bruins (112 points) and Toronto Maple Leafs (105 points) series.

The Blue Jackets' top line of Panarin, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Atkinson had 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in the first three games, but one point, a Dubois goal in Game 6, in the next three. They were able to create chances and get pucks in deep. Forget the D.C. sports trifecta; you could've made a pretty penny letting it ride on six straight postseason wins.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Capitals rallied for four consecutive wins to finish off the Blue Jackets. They'll have Ovechkin and Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov and goalie Braden Holtby, as they have in the past two playoff battles. They had a power-play goal in each of the six games in the series. They're getting scoring throughout their lineup.

It could also be advisable to play Joonas Korpisalo more next season so that Bobrovsky is better rested for the playoffs. Granted, there aren't many goaltenders who have a great time against the Pittsburgh Penguins, who Bobrovksy has had to deal with each of the past two post-seasons, but that doesn't somehow make his.897 playoff SP from 2012-13 onward any better.

The D.C. sports playoff calendar is empty Tuesday, and that's a John Tortorella crying shame, because Capital One Arena's primary tenants are riding an unprecedented postseason hot streak. That's what a good team will do to you.

Really what lies ahead is a tough series. Washington will look to do something they have only done one out of ten tries, beat the Penguins in the playoffs. This might be their final hope... Tell us in the comments section below.
