Patrick Vieira ready to lead Arsenal in place of Arsene Wenger

Hoffenheim head coach Julian Nagelsmann

He has not taken a new job since leaving previous year, with Chelsea also seen as potential suitors if Antonio Conte leaves at the end of the season.

Wenger on Wednesday admitted the "timing was not really my decision" as the Frenchman prepares to leave the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season, 12 months into a two-year contract signed last summer.

Tensions at the club seem to be at an all-time high after Arsene Wenger announced last week that he will step down as manager after 22 years in charge of the Gunners. "For the rest, I have spoken about it already".

Speaking ahead of the Europa League tie with Atletico Madrid, Wenger was asked why he is leaving at the end of this season in spite of his contract running until June 2019.

"I think he will be available for Egypt at the World Cup but not anymore for Arsenal".

"I knew that was not the case". I will continue to work, that is for sure. "At the moment, I'm not ready to commit to anything else than to give my best for Arsenal football club".

Asked if he had any second thoughts about his announcement, Wenger said: "Look, you're never sure you do the right thing, but life is interesting because you have to deal with different kinds of situations". Is there a ideal goodbye?

"At the moment I'm just focused on that".

"My biggest satisfaction would be to be successful together with the group of players that I have".

The midfielder suffered an ankle ligament damage in Arsenal's 4-1 victory over West Ham United in Saturday's English Premier League game. Mesut Ozil will obviously start tomorrow night if fully fit but there is uncertainty about whether Petr Cech and Jack Wilshere will do the same.
