QC delegation visits Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh

Rohingya Activist Recalls Devastation at World's Most Densely Populated Refugee Camp in Bangladesh

Worldwide media has been giving widespread coverage to the four-day visit of the UNSC to Bangladesh and Myanmar to address one of the world's worst refugee crises, stemming from the forced migration of Rohingyas.

Rohingya Muslims have always been treated as outsiders in Myanmar, even though their families have lived in the country for generations. We will try to convince both governments - the government of Bangladesh and the government of Myanmar - to engage in constructive negotiations.

All the 15 members of the delegation voiced commonly that it is "a severe crisis", but also underlined that "there is no magic solution to it" while briefing journalists in Ukhia upazila. "We work together in the Security Council (on the issue)", one of the delegation members told reporters after visiting Rohingya camp.

Peru's Ambassador to the UN and delegation leader Gustavo Adolfo Meza Cuadra Velasqez said they are unified and mentioned that things are happening including appointment of special envoy on Myanmar by the UN Secretary General which will help find a solution.

The high-profile delegation of the UN Security Council termed Rohingya crisis a very "complex" issue and said there is no "easy solution" to it.

Myanmar has said the military operation in Rakhine is aimed at rooting out extremists.

The state minister said the UNSC team agreed on broader issues, including the fact that the solution lies in Myanmar as problem is in Myanmar, but there has been no consensus yet on imposing sanction on Myanmar or stronger action against Myanmar.

"I am here to talk to them, we want justice from them", he said.

As a convoy carrying the delegates rolled into the camp, hundreds of Rohingya refugees lined the road and held up signs, which bore messages including "welcome UNSC delegation" and "we want justice".

"The lack of a U.N. Security Council resolution has left the Myanmar government convinced that it has literally gotten away with mass murder", Kenneth Roth, the rights watchdog's executive director, told reporters in Yangon on Friday as he called on the United Nations to refer the Rohingya crisis the International Criminal Court.

Rohingya refugees holding placards await the arrival of a UN Security Council team at the Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp in Kutupalong, Bangladesh, on April 29, 2018.

Myanmar's allies Russian Federation and China - both permanent members with the veto power in the Security Council - have shown resistance to the involvement of the world body in the refugee crisis.

He mentioned that when they will go back to NY, they will try to explore ways and means to expedite the implementation of the agreement signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar for safe, free, voluntary and dignified return of Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Myanmar.

He said the team will return to Dhaka, the capital, on Sunday and is expected to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday morning before leaving for Myanmar.

Kuwait's Ambassador Mansour al-Otaibi said the visit was not about "naming and shaming" Myanmar, but that "the message will be very clear for them: the global community is following the situation and has great interest in resolving it".
