Senate confirms Mike Pompeo as 70th secretary of state

US Senate confirms CIA director Mike Pompeo as Trump's secretary of state

Mike Pompeo on Capitol Hill, April 18, 2018.

But he said during his confirmation hearing that he was open to fixing, rather than blowing apart, the pact, which the West believes is key to preventing Iran from getting a nuclear bomb.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Mike Pompeo as President Donald Trump's secretary of state on Thursday, putting the former Central Intelligence Agency director in a pivotal role to handle U.S. foreign policy challenges such as North Korea and Iran.

As senators continued to vote, the tally was 54-41 in favour of the Republican former member of the House of Representatives, meaning he was confirmed in the post.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito swore in Pompeo immediately following the highly-anticipated vote.

Pompeo takes over at the State Department from former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who reportedly had a rocky relationship with the president that ended when Trump fired him on Twitter a few months back.

Mr Pompeo narrowly avoided a historic rebuke by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"As longtime admirers and supporters of the State Department's defense of American interests and values across the globe, and as proud civil society partners in that vital mission, AJC congratulates you on your swearing-in as Secretary of State", said AJC CEO David Harris. Rand Paul - the only Republican who had considered voting against the confirmation - didn't come around until speaking with President Trump personally.

Trump and Kim will meet in May or early June at a location that is yet to be determined and it will not be in the U.S. The United States issued several rounds of sanctions against Russian Federation.

Pompeo's confirmation comes after weeks of uncertainty as to whether he would make it through the Senate at all, given the robust objection from almost every corner of civil society and with theearly opposition of Sen.

Pompeo takes the helm ahead of Trump's expected decision about whether to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal by a May 12 deadline and reimpose sanctions on Tehran.

While in Congress, Pompeo was an outspoken opponent of the Iran nuclear accord.

AJC has been honored to work closely with the State Department throughout our history, exchanging information and consulting with USA diplomats when we travel to other lands.

Nearly immediately after his confirmation, Pompeo was set to fly to Brussels to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation foreign-ministers trip.

From Brussels, Pompeo was expected to travel to the Middle East with stops in Saudi Arabia, Israel and Jordan over the weekend and Monday, said the officials, who were not authorized to publicly discuss the planning and spoke on condition of anonymity.
