Spotify Launches Redesigned App For Free Users

Spotify

Today, Spotify announced an update to its mobile app that emphasizes a key advantage over Apple Music: The free, ad-supported version of its music subscription service. With the new version, users can listen on-demand to whatever song they want, as many times as they want, as long as those songs appear on one of the 15 personalized discovery playlists.

Until now, Spotify free users could only listen to shuffled songs rather than choosing specific tracks in any order, but will now be able to personalise their own playlists.

Gustav Soderstrom, chief R&D officer, said that its new mobile app reduces data consumption by 75 percent. The new service also lets users like or hide certain artists, which will help Spotify's algorithms find the right artists and songs to feature.

The update is the first mobile revamp since the app was launched in 2014 and will be released to all Spotify free users "in the coming weeks" the company said. With the new version of Spotify's app, over a dozen popular playlists including Discover Weekly will be available for on-demand playback without shuffling.

But with a dramatically improved free service, why would users opt to pay for premium?

As a user saves songs to a playlist, Spotify will suggest similar songs based on what you add.

Spotify now operates a two-tier system - premium and free.

During Spotify's investor-day presentation last month, Spotify co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek stated that his company was working on launching its platform in some of the world's most populous markets, including India, China and across Africa.

Global head of creator services Troy Carter spoke about the new model's impact on artists, who would be suspicious of expanding the services free options as their assumed expense.

Spotify also shared its latest subscriber numbers: 71 million paid customers and 90 million free users.
