Trump's Michael Cohen Comments Are Already Costing Him

Cohen raid 'doesn't have to do with me' - Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump distanced himself from his longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen on Thursday, hours before a judge ruled that documents seized from Cohen by the Federal Bureau of Investigation should be reviewed by an independent court-appointed official. But it was a brief tangent about his relationship with longtime fixer and archetypical casino pit boss Michael Cohen that is causing the most consternation for Rudy Giuliani, Ty Cobb, Judge Jeanine, and whoever else is on Trump's legal team these days.

A federal judge on Thursday decided documents seized in FBI raids targeting lawyer Michael Cohen should be handed over to an independent reviewer, hours after President Donald Trump sought to distance himself from his personal lawyer on Fox News.

"Michael represents me, like with this insane Stormy Daniels deal, he represented me", Trump told Fox News in a phone interview on Thursday.

Statements by President Donald Trump on Fox & Friends Thursday morning were quickly used by prosecutors to rebuff claims about attorney-client privilege made by his personal attorney Michael Cohen. And you know, from what I see he did absolutely nothing wrong. "He represents me on this insane Stormy Daniels deal". Avenatti tweeted Thursday. "As I predicted, that has now been shown to be completely false". In a raid on his office, home and hotel suite, FBI investigators are reported to have looked for material related to the payment and on Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who has claimed to have had an affair with Trump around the same time as Daniels.

Cohen's lawyers have argued that the judge should allow them or a special master to review the seized materials and filter out materials covered by attorney-client privilege.

And in a filing Thursday related to the ongoing criminal investigation into Cohen, federal prosecutors said very few of the documents seized in an April 9 FBI raid of Cohen's homes and offices likely were protected by attorney-client privilege because Cohen had few clients and did little legal work. Federal prosecutors from the Southern District of NY were quick to cite the line in a letter to United States District Judge Kimba Wood on Thursday, ahead of a conference scheduled for the afternoon.

Cohen has admitted paying $130,000 to Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, before the 2016 election to secure her silence about having sex with Trump, which he denies.

Cohen said Wednesday that he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in a civil case Daniels brought seeking to invalidate the confidentiality agreement she signed in exchange for the hush money.

There's a reason so many prominent attorneys have declined to represent him: They know he can't be trusted.

The investigation stemmed in part from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into possible collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, something that Trump has repeatedly denied.
