US Waffle House shooting suspect arrested after manhunt

WKRNPolice have put up police tape to keep people away from the restaurant while they carry out a probe

Authorities recovered the auto but didn't figure out who had stolen it until too late.

It all started at 3:23 A.M. Sunday morning when police say Reinking got out of his truck wearing nothing but a green jacket wielding an AR-15 rifle. If not for the efforts of a patron who wrestled the gun away, many more would have died.

Reinking escaped on foot from the restaurant and shed his only item of clothing.

He was arrested on Monday following a massive, 34-hour manhunt.

But the officer grabbed him and escorted him outside, where he was arrested for unlawful entry. He killed two people outside the waffle house, then two people inside before he was taken down by James Shaw, Jr. He carried a black backpack with a silver semi-automatic weapon and.45-caliber ammunition. The police said Reinking, who had fled the crime scene after a customer at the eatery snatched his weapon, surrendered without any resistance.

Police said Reinking opened fire in the restaurant parking lot before storming the inside, which contained about 20 people. The BMW theft had not initially been tied to Reinking. But authorities in IL and Colorado shared past reports suggesting multiple red flags about a disturbed man with paranoid delusions. He once claimed that singer Taylor Swift had been stalking him. He agreed to go to a hospital for an evaluation after repeatedly resisting the request, a sheriff's report said.

He would make a similar claim about Swift in Salida, Colo., almost a year later, in March 2017, authorities there said. In that June 16, 2017 incident, Reinking was wearing a pink woman's coat over his underwear at the time, and a concerned citizen contacted authorities because they believed he had an AR-15 rifle in his possession, the report said. Investigators believed he had an AR-15 rifle in his auto trunk, but it was never displayed.

In 2012, Chambers filed felony charges against the father of a 14-year-old boy for allowing his son to illegally possess a handgun.

It's unclear whether Reinking was armed when he was arrested.

Reinking was not armed at the time, but at the FBI's request, IL state police revoked Reinking's state firearms card and seized four of his guns, authorities said. Four guns, including the AR-15 used in the shootings, were transferred to his father, a procedure allowed under IL law.

Reinking's mental health was also under scrutiny. Police said the person found a handwritten ID card with "Travis Reinking" on the bag.

According to police, Jeffery acknowledges giving weapons back to Travis.

During a press conference Tuesday ATF Special Agent Marcus Watson said, "All Federal partners are looking at him for any potential violations of federal firearm laws or obviously the homicide he committed, he potentially could face charges". But Reinking's father, who has an IL firearm owner's card, was allowed to take them and agreed to "keep the weapons secure and out of the possession of Travis".

It is not clear why Reinking moved away from Morton, Illinois, or if he lived elsewhere before settling in Nashville. She has a home in Nashville, though it is not her only residence. Police say he was employed in construction for a while, and there would have been enough work in the booming city for him. Sanderlin was an employee at the restaurant.

Shaw says he does what anyone would have done, "I'm not a hero".
