WhatsApp raises minimum user age to 16 ahead of GDPR

WhatsApp increases age limit to 16 in Europe

That having been said, if the European Union insists on more stringent checks and balances, it may find itself in a catch-22 situation.

Facebook, which has a separate data policy, is taking a different approach to users aged between 13 and 15.

While this means huge changes for organisations, the changes for consumers will mostly centre around access to your online data.

First in most peoples' mind is GDPR, but countries like Iceland, Norway and Slovenia have their own strict privacy protection laws, and the assumption (some would say the hope) is that GDPR will affect the legal landscape worldwide, as a lack of standardization could inhibit trade.

Challenges remain for the data catalogers: if privacy by design becomes reality, unless they're already part of the enterprise fabric, they will become obsolete.

The rules give Europeans more control over their personal data. "We work hard to build a great experience for people Tweeting, and seeing Tweets all over the world, and protecting the privacy of the people who use Twitter every day".

U.S. Senators John Kennedy of Louisiana and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota introduced the Social Media Privacy and Consumer Rights Act of 2018, which is supposed to improve transparency, strengthen consumers' recourse options in case of a data breach, and ensure that companies are compliant with privacy policies that protect consumers.

Currently, WhatsApp users must be 13 and over, but the firm announced this week that it's raising the age limit by three years. To control those settings, all you need to go to your account Settings and select Privacy and safety on the left menu.

WhatsApp, founded in 2009 and bought by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014, has come under pressure from some European governments in recent years because of its use of end-to-end encryption and its plan to share user data with its parent company.

Under the law, children must be 16 years of age in order to give consent for their personal data to be processed. It has made substantial changes in the past, including allowing users to download a copy of their data from the app.

Major tech companies are rolling out tools for GDPR compliance. Twitter says that is using this information "to better understand the use of services" and that is not associating the "web browsing history with your name, email address, phone number, or username".
