Amazon Go cashier-less stores are coming to Chicago and San Francisco

Cashier-less store coming to Illinois

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to the news outlet that the company was planning to open stores in each of the cities, but did not specify when they would welcome customers.

Four months after Amazon opened its first futuristic convenience store in its hometown of Seattle, the company said on Monday that it will bring new Amazon Go locations to San Francisco and Chicago later this year. Now, it has posted listings for store managers in San Francisco and Chicago, according to The Seattle Times.

Real-estate tracker Curbed in February spotted a building permit for construction of a 625-square-foot "Amazon store" in Chicago's Loop district.

Amazon debuted its first Amazon Go location at its headquarters in Seattle in December 2016; it opened to the public in January of this year. Aside from Seattle, Los Angeles is also a possible location of another cashierless store.

The actual Amazon Go store is extremely tech-heavy, was expensive to build and can only sell a narrow range of specially-selected items - nowhere near the 50,000 or so items a typical supermarket stocks.

Talking about Amazon Go, it's a revolutionary store that holds nearly everything. Once inside the store, customers can grab what they need and just walk out. There are no checkout lines and no checkout counters, though staff hover helpfully to aid new customers who are hesitant about how it all works. After that, Amazon's system uses cameras and other sensors to track shoppers and identify what they take off shelves. It holds its own Amazon Fresh grocery along with Whole Foods.
