Amid Trump threats, Tehran says nuclear deal is all-or-nothing

President Donald Trump holds up a proclamation declaring his intention to withdraw from the JCPOA after signing it in the Diplomatic Room at the White House

"We hope that with this visit to China and other countries we will be able to construct a clear future design for the comprehensive agreement", Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters after talks in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

The danger that military tensions in the Middle East will mount after the USA decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal is growing, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said, speaking at the meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

After Trump announced the USA withdrawal from the deal on Tuesday, Rouhani warned that Iran would resume uranium enrichment at an even higher rate if the accord collapses.

Tehran has warned it is prepared to resume "industrial-scale" uranium enrichment "without any restrictions" unless Europe can provide solid guarantees that it can maintain the economic benefits it gained from the nuclear agreement despite Washington reimposing sanctions.

Arguing the nuclear deal wasn't tough enough on Iran, Trump's government is now re-imposing sanctions, and any companies or governments with links to the US face sanctions if they do not comply.

She added: "Britain, France and Germany were of the opinion that the agreement against Iran's nuclear armament is an agreement that certainly has weaknesses, but an agreement we should stand by".

"If the nuclear deal is to continue, the interests of the people of Iran must be assured", Zarif added.

With regard to oil prices and fundamentals, most analysts agree that the gravity of the effect US sanctions against Iran will have is questionable.

"For the first time, Iran has the chance to show the world they are not the rogue nation they are always presented as, that they negotiated in good faith and keep to their commitments", said Karim Emile Bitar of the Institute for worldwide and Strategic Studies in Paris.

Iran said it would remain committed to the deal without Washington if Tehran achieved its goals - namely being protected from sanctions against key sectors of its economy such as oil - in cooperation with other countries that have signed up to the agreement.

The pact's signing had been planned for long time, but the move coincides with the USA move to re-impose sanctions against Iran that have rattled US allies. It is being pondered upon by the European Union personnel that they are making changes to this statute to get around the constraints laid by US.

Though Europe will do its best to keep the deal afloat and convince Iran to uphold its commitment without the United States, O'Sullivan said: "I very much doubt it will be possible to reinstate anything like that worldwide consensus [in the JCPOA] given that it is the United States walking away from a deal that Iran agreed to".

In other words, Europeans say the United States who has abandoned its end of the bargain can reap benefits under the deal, he noted.

Instead, Iran is talking with Europe, Russia and China to see if the deal can be kept alive, though that is far from assured.

As those sanctions kick in, it will have an even broader effect as well, Bolton said. "The answer is no", Le Maire told reporters in Paris, adding that France won't accept the "vassalization of Europe" by USA officials bent on reimposing sanctions on Iran.

Trump is entering denuclearization talks with North Korea, and he needs to show he's serious about ending the prospect of nuclear arms, not just rolling them back, said Harley Lippman, the president of the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy.

"Let's not fool ourselves that there are dozens of things we can do", said a senior European diplomat.

A French government spokesman said European Union partners could fight the sanctions under world trade rules.

The 2015 agreement between major powers and Iran set limits on its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
