Armenian ruling party won't nominate own candidate for PM

Armenia's Acting Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin

Protest leader Nikol Pashinian has been nominated to become prime minister by the country's major opposition factions.

"Pashinyan was nominated as a candidate for Armenia's prime minister at a meeting of the Elk faction", Elk faction member Edmon Marukyan told reporters. All three parties have now declared support for Pashinyan's candidacy. On April 30 I will meet with representatives of all factions of the National Assembly to guarantee that your candidate elected as prime minister. The ruling Republican Party has not nominated its candidate.

The absolute majority in the National Assembly has the Republican party, which holds 58 seats. "We are witnessing a decisive moment", said Arut Khachatryan, a 17-year-old high school pupil, adding that the ruling Republican Party should quit politics.

The remaining two political forces Tsarukyan bloc and Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) said that they would support the "people's candidate", i.e., Pashinyan.

"There is a mood that a prime minister should be elected on May 1", he said, without elaborating. Since 13 April, tens of thousands have come out to the streets daily in what Pashinyan has called a "velvet revolution".

Armenia's parliament plans to choose a replacement on Tuesday for Serzh Sargsyan, who resigned last week amid the street demonstrations over his selection as prime minister.

Protest leader Pashinyan, a former journalist turned lawmaker who has been instrumental in organising the protests, has said he wants the job.

Russian border guards patrol Armenia's border with Turkey and Iran. Parliament made Sargsyan prime minister a week later under a new government structure that gave the premier more power than the president.

"We are not putting anyone forward in the state's interest".

On Friday and Saturday, Pashinyan received a hero's welcome in a number of towns and villages outside the capital as he drove around the landlocked country with his supporters in a convoy.
