Asteroid the Size of City Block to Pass Earth Today

2010 WC9 Asteroid Will Whiz Close To Earth On May 15th

Lost in space for over 7 years, massive asteroid 2010 WG9 has been found again, and is making a return flyby of Earth on Tuesday, as it passes within the orbit of the Moon.

The space rock is larger than the estimated size of the Chelyabinsk meteor before the latter hit Earth's atmosphere in 2013. This isn't a particularly large Asteroid, it measures 197 to 427-feet. While this doesn't happen often, this should pose no danger to us on earth.

The giant asteroid, around the size of the Statue of Liberty, will track a peculiar path and fly between Earth and its natural satellite.

It's about the size of a football pitch and it will come as close as 126,419 miles from the Earth's surface.

Asteroid 2010 WC9 is an Apollo type space rock. After just 21 hours after the asteroid was observed in the laboratory in Arizona, it is closer to Earth at a distance of less than 200 thousand kilometers. The 2010 sign means that it was initially detected in 2010, particularly on November 30, by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. The asteroid 2010 WC9's diameter is somewhere between 60-130 meters.

It won't be visible to the eye at any point, but with an amateur telescope pointed at the right location and time, it might be bright enough to been seen.

"The air will continue less than 25 minutes, because the Asteroid will cross our field of view in this period of time".

Nearly eight years later, on May 8, astronomers managed to track down the asteroid, and after close observations they concluded it was 2010 WC9 that had returned. The asteroid will proceed pretty quickly (30 minutes of arc per second).

2010 WC9, dubbed the "lost" asteroid, will whiz past Earth at half the lunar distance.

If you'd like to see it for yourself, the Northolt Branch Observatories in London will be carrying it live on their Facebook page. We are of course collecting astrometric data whilst this is happening, but the motion of the asteroid will be apparent every five seconds!
