Cowboys address receiving issues by drafting WR Michael Gallup with 81st pick

Cowboys get tight end in fourth round, taking Dalton Schultz

The Cowboys used six picks on offense and three on defense, and made a pair of trades on Day 3.

They ended up having to tout their tight ends as well when ESPN reported on the draft's second day that Jason Witten was planning to retire after 15 seasons to join the "Monday Night Football" crew as lead analyst.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Colorado State Rams wide receiver Michael Gallup with the 81st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Schultz is an inline tight end that can instantly be a blocker for Dallas. The current roster includes unproven Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and Rico Gathers at the position. Three of his TDs came a year ago, during his senior season.

"When you lose a player like Dez and what he's brought to the table throughout his career, we're remaking our receiving room, " executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "I think he will keep getting better".

According to Nexstar'sTobin McDuff, who is reporting from the draft, the fans were happy to welcome Leighton Vander Esch to town.

A first-team All-America tackle as a sophomore, Williams declared for the draft after his junior season with the Longhorns. He started only five games last season because of a left knee injury, and missed the bowl game to prepare for the draft.

"There was so much positive feedback", Williams said, "whether it was kids that actually went through the adversity or if it was parents". The only other issue could be 33-inch arms, which is a bit on the short side for a tackle in the NFL.
