FCC sets a record breaking $120m fine for rude robocalls

FCC fines man $120M over massive robocalling campaign

They would then be transferred to a call center, where live operators would attempt to sell them one or more "discounted" vacation packages, like timeshares.

In 2017, the FCC first alleged that Adrian Abramovich made 96 million robocalls during a three-month period in 2016. It rejected Abramovich's claim that he had no intent to cause harm, and that the proposed forfeiture amount was unconstitutional.

The FCC cracked down on a robocall operation by fining its organizer $120 million.

The FCC said in June "Abramovich is the perpetrator of one of the largest - and most risky - illegal robocalling campaigns that the Commission has ever investigated".

"The Commission received numerous consumer complaints about these calls". Abramovich was responsible for the most extensive caller ID spoofing schemes we have ever encountered, and he caused companies and individuals extensive harm. "Just ask his victims - a number of who are elderly - who were duped into purchasing travel deals under false pretenses", Pai said. The FCC said Mr Abramovich had spoofed his caller ID to make people believe they were receiving a call from a local number.

If there were a Guinness World Record for robocalls, a Miami man may have set it. Several of these major companies, which were getting complaints from consumers who thought they were malfeasors, assisted the FCC in its investigation.

In southern New Jersey, Tony Novak is frustrated with multiple robocalls a day, many appearing to come from his own area code.

YouMail, a company that blocks robocalls and tracks them, revealed that an estimated 3.4 billion robocalls to consumers were placed in the month of April in the United States, which is an all-time high.

Last month, Abramovich told a Senate panel that he was not the "kingpin of robocalling" and denied any wrongdoing.

The $120 million fine is part of the commission's multifaceted effort to crack down on robocalls, which spurns more than 200,000 complaints to the FCC every year. "There are websites right now. that offer volume pricing for using their robocalling system that can handle millions of calls".

"It is the top consumer protection priority for the chairman", said Wiquist, "but there's no silver bullet".
