First named storm of season forms

Alberto is likely to make landfall Monday between New Orleans and Destin Florida before moving into Mississippi and Alabama by Tuesday

Subtropical Storm Alberto officially formed around 10 a.m. just off the Yucatán Peninsula in the northwestern Caribbean Sea, which means the system has picked up a noticeable rotation and kicked up winds topping 39 miles per hour.

On the forecast track, Alberto is expected to pass near the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula Friday night and be near the western tip of Cuba Saturday morning.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, but like this system, some develop outside of that period. But because the most destructive storms' names are retired, this year we won't have Sandy.

Alberto is moving slowly over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

A hurricane center map shows Alberto approaching the Gulf Coast on Monday, somewhere between Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle.

The system is expected to intensify during the weekend and will likely consolidate into a tropical storm at some point on Sunday.

Meteorologists say heavy rainfall may lead to significant street flooding.

Sub-tropical storm Alberto formed just south of the Gulf this morning and is expected to move into the Gulf overnight with its sights set on the Northern Gulf Coast this holiday weekend. Tropical storm-force winds of 40 mph extend outward up to 140 miles - mainly to the east of the center. The highest winds are also now away from the center. Essentially, the characteristics of a subtropical system mean it lacks the punch to quickly increase in strength and become a hurricane. First Alert Weather expects, on average, two to five inches of rainfall through Tuesday, with some higher totals possible near the coast and west of the Apalachicola River.

The Government of Cuba has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. "There could be some possible high surf with hazardous high risk of rip currents along the beaches".
