Four killed in latest Indonesia 'terror' assault

AFP Officer 4 attackers dead in Indonesia police station assault

In addition to the two injured cops, one police officer killed after getting hit by suspected terrorists' auto, one journalist injured, four perpetrators killed while at least one is on the run.

This was the second attack on a police premise in the country since Monday.

The church bombing family - whose father was named a local JAD leader - and two other families linked to this week's attacks knew each other and were part of the same Koran study group, police said.

This week's attacks are the worst in the world's biggest Muslim-majority country since the bombing of tourist-packed restaurants in Bali in 2005.

Police suspect they were carried out by a cell of the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organisation on a US State Department terrorist list that has allegedly drawn hundreds of Indonesian sympathisers of Islamic State. Another man was arrested and four others were suspected to have fled the scene, it said.

The bloody violence is putting pressure on lawmakers to pass a stalled security law that would give police more power to take pre-emptive action against terror suspects.

Earlier, an internal police report said that one of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body.

One policeman was reported killed and three people injured in the attack.

All six bombers were killed, including the mother who was Indonesia's first known female suicide bomber.

It is said to be the deadliest since the 2002 Bali attack.

Local police initially said they had killed three people and wounded another.

The radical group supports Islamic State, whose ambitions have been reined in after losing most of the land it once occupied in Iraq and Syria.

Setyo said one of the assailants was captured and taken to the Pekanbaru Police station for interrogation.

They followed a deadly prison riot staged by Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail near Jakarta last week.
