Fresh elections in Italy 'by start of 2019'

Italian President Sergio Mattarella addresses the media after meeting Italy's premier-designate Giuseppe Conte in Rome on Sunday

The leader of Italy's largest political party called for the country's president to be impeached after choosing to veto a choice for economy minister.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella said he refused to approve populist leaders' choice of an economy minister who has expressed anti-euro views because the appointment would have "alarmed markets and investors, Italians and foreigners".

The president's biggest fear is that the new government will try and take Italy out of the EU.

Mr Savona, a former industry minister, has questioned whether Italy should ditch the euro as its currency.

Conte and Mattarella had met on Sunday to discuss officials selected by the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement and the rightist League to comprise the new government cabinet for Italy, which has been without a government for 84 days, reports Efe news. Since the formation of the populist ruling coalition, Italian stocks have lost nearly 9%.

European stocks were trading flat on the day and Italian bond yields were up 3 basis points on concern new elections would turn into a debate on euro membership.

The prospect of Italy's government going on a spending spree on promised tax cuts and welfare benefits roiled markets last week.

Markets gave up earlier gains as the Five Star Movement and the League raged against Mattarella, suggesting months of acrimonious political campaigning.

"If there's not the OK of Berlin, Paris or Brussels, a government can not be formed in Italy". Mattarella added: "Now some political forces are asking me to hold elections.

Blocking a ministerial choice is beyond (the president's) role", Alessandro Di Battista, a top 5-Star politician, said. No time was given for the meeting.

An administration led by Cottarelli would likely only be a short-term solution because the majority of parliamentarians have said they would not support a technocrat government. It would be the first time in postwar Italian history that such a re-vote was needed. "We will soon vote on the budget law and will understand what will happen", another 5-Star source said.

Voters could be headed to the polls again in a matter of weeks.

Italy has been without a government since an election on 4 March resulted in a hung parliament.

European stocks were slightly higher Monday morning, as investors monitored signs of thawing tensions between the USA and North Korea and reacted to renewed political turmoil in Italy.

"However, it is far from certain that Mattarella's current move will end Italy's drama".

"We will ask parliament to charge Mattarella with high treason because he has acted under foreign pressure", Brothers of Italy chief Giorgia Meloni said on La7 television channel.

The Five Star's Di Maio demanded impeachment under article 90 of the constitution.

"We need to keep cool". Some things can not be done in the throes of anger.

The incumbent president has been supported by head of the center-right Forza Italia party, former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, as well as the Democratic Party.
