Gaza border falls quiet after Egypt brokers ceasefire

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a weekly cabinet meeting

Israel said it has acted against militants who used the mass gatherings as cover to attack troops and try to infiltrate Israeli territory. Israel denied there was an agreement, but a senior Israeli defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated to reporters that an understanding had been reached under which Israel would not conduct additional strikes in Gaza as long as no more rockets or mortar shells were fired.

It was the largest barrage fired from Gaza targeting Israel since a 2014 war, and Israel's response would also be the biggest since then.

"It could be that the other side is not interested in escalation", said Bennett, adding that Israel will not be the ones to cause the situation to deteriorate.

The Palestinians have escalated the conflict in recent months after holding multiple, often violent, protests near the border between Israel and Gaza, prompting clashes between the Israeli Defense Force and Palestinians.

The Israeli military said most of the projectiles fired Tuesday were intercepted, but three soldiers were wounded.

Later on Tuesday, Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the massive mortar fire, which was meant to hit Israeli citizens while on their way to work and schools.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed Tuesday to "respond to these attacks powerfully".

According to the military, among the targets struck by the air force were a terror tunnel that extended into Israel, Hamas drone facilities, naval bases, caches of shoulder-fired SA-7 missiles and a rocket manufacturing plant. "I don't think serious people in Israel want to reoccupy Gaza", said Yaar. The Israeli military said some of the mortar rounds were supplied by Iran.

Al-Qassam and al-Quds said their "joint response" of rocket attacks from Gaza on the "occupation's military positions ... is a declaration, that these crimes can not be tolerated in any way".

An earlier statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said that Israel was trying to reverse Indonesia's decision, but such efforts seem to have failed, prompting a reciprocal ban. On May 14 during the climax of the "Great March of Return" protests and on the day of the US Jerusalem Embassy move, over 60 Palestinians were shot by Israeli fire of which 52 were members of the terror group.

Hamas said in a statement on Tuesday that "what the resistance carried out this morning comes within the framework of the natural right to defend our people".

The attacks on southern Israel were, in fact, another Iranian attempt to spark a new war on the southern border after the failed attempts to invade Israel from Gaza over the past seven weeks.

Hamas initially billed the weekly border protests as a call to break through the fence and return to homes that were lost 70 years ago during the war surrounding Israel's establishment.
