Iran attempts to bomb Israel; Israel destroys Iranian positions in Syria

Assad labels Trump's Syria policy as inconsistent, hopes US and Russia don't come to blows

Last week, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who was born in Moldova-part of the Soviet Union at the time-noted in a Russian-newspaper interview that Israel has not joined in Western sanctions against Russia stemming from its Crimea invasion or the poisoning of the Russian spy in the United Kingdom. A number of those rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome aerial defense system, resulting in bright and sudden explosions.

Israel bombed dozens of Iranian military targets in Syria on Thursday as a retaliation against an alleged rocket attack in the occupied Golan Heights area by Tehran, the Israel Defence Force (IDF) said. "Israel and Iran have been in a cold war for maybe 20 years now, but now it's out in the open: direct, kinetic engagement between the forces, with Iranian casualties mounting". It also comes ahead of a series of patriotic holidays in Israel, coinciding with the controversial moving of the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Indeed, an Iranian parliamentarian, Abolfazl Hassan Beigi, went so far as to tell Russia's Sputnik news that Israel was "lying" in its claim to have attacked Iranian forces in Syria.

That night, mere hours after Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin met, Israel launched its massive attack in Syria, giving rise to speculation that Putin had given Israel a green light for the assault. "We hit almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria", said Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

"We don't want an escalation, but won't let anyone attack us or build an infrastructure to attack us in the future", he said.

Expectations of a regional flare-up were stoked by U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement on Tuesday that he was withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear deal. Iran also could be wary of military entanglement at a time when it is trying to salvage the worldwide nuclear deal.

War begets war. Not to engage in both-sidesism, but it's true here: Israel and Iran have both intentionally escalated tensions, and that's why we find ourselves at this perilous moment.

Germany and Britain joined the United States in denouncing the rocket fire towards the Israel-occupied Golan Heights they also said was carried out by Iran, while France reiterated its "unwavering support for Israel's security".

Pointing to the civil war in Syria, Merkel said that numerous global conflicts today were flaring on the doorstep of Europe.

Syrian media said the Israeli military targeted a Syrian military post near the border after the Golan Heights attack.

This escalation is only the second time that Iran has been accused of directly targeting Israeli soil, following a failed drone attack in February.

"We are continuing to review the operation, even when you have a successful operation, there is still a lot to review", he said. Iran pushed allied militias toward the Golan Heights and moved rockets and rocket production into Syria to better supply Hezbollah with more accurate weaponry.

Israel was founded in 1948, and immediately found itself at war with Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Iraq, Yemen, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.

Iran has sent thousands of troops to back Assad, and Israel fears that as the fighting nears an end, Iran and tens of thousands of Shiite militiamen will turn their focus to Israel.
