Noura Hussein sentenced to death for killing rapist husband

Activists Take To Twitter As Teenager Is Sentenced To Death For Killing Unwanted Husband

A court in Sudan has sentenced to death a 19-year-old girl for murdering her husband who happens to be her cousin after he raped her.

"Noura Hussein's lifelong wish was to become a teacher, but she ended up being forced to marry an abusive man who raped and brutalized her", said Amnesty's deputy regional director for East Africa, Seif Magango, according to BuzzFeed News. A social media campaign - #JusticeForNoura - has gained widespread attention. But her father tricked her into coming back home three years later and sent her to her husband.

"Noura's lawyers say they plan to appeal against the decision, but we also need strong global support from organisations such as the African Union, the United Nations and the European Union to support her". Over 140,000 people have also signed a petition to help her, which you can sign here. After the teenager refused to consummate the marriage, her husband's relatives allegedly held her down while he raped her. The husband attempted to rape her again the following day, which is when she stabbed him to death.

Hussein was convicted of murder on April 29, 2018, and was today sentenced to death. "He recruited some of his cousins and brought them [to his] home where they held her down while her husband raped her", Sarah ElHasan, a rights activist, told Al Jazeera. Hussien's team will reject and appeal the death penalty, as she was defending herself at the time of the killing and was mentally and psychologically disturbed as a result of rape, according to the Guardian.

Shahd Hamza, 20, was among those who came to support Hussein in court, after hearing about her case in a group chat on WhatsApp. Equality Now, a non-governmental organization established in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world, has prepared a letter to Sudan's president on Hussein's behalf, requesting that she be pardoned. But Hussein's case was different.

Hussein's case is significant, Afrika Youth Movement wrote, "Not only because she is one of the many women in a similar situation - subjected to patriarchal male violence, blamed and abandoned by community, at the mercy of religious laws, without recourse to justice. She stood for her rights".
