Off with e's head: e-cig explosion causes first vaping death

Tallmadge Wakeman D'Elia, a TV producer was killed in a fire in his St Petersburg Florida bedroom on May 5

In what is believed to be one of the first deaths from an e-cigarette explosion, a 38-year-old man in Florida was killed when his vape pen exploded, sending projectiles into his head and causing a small fire in his house. An autopsy has confirmed that Florida man Tallmadge D'Elia may have been the very first death caused by an exploding vape pen. At the time of his death, D'Elia was using a "mod" type of Smok-E Mountain Mech Works pen that was manufactured in the Philippines.

A former CNBC producer has passed away after his e-cigarette exploded and became lodged in his skull, according to a newly released autopsy.

Use vape pens with safety features. In 2013, Jennifer Ries was awarded $1.9 million when she suffered second-degree burns from an e-cigarette explosion while Los Angeles Superior Court is now investigating 10 civil suits filed across the state by injured e-cigarette users.

E-cigarette users are also recommended to buy their products from reliable sources and to follow the guidelines for use recommended by manufacturers. A report from the U.S. Fire Administration blames 195 incidents from 2009 to 2016 on e-cigs exploding or catching fire, resulting in 133 injuries of which 38 were severe. Before then, a New Yorker suffered third-degree burns after the device exploded in his trousers, the Times reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has a page dedicated to e-cigarette explosion dangers.

These cases were not fatal.

In its official report on Electronic Cigarette Fires and Explosions, FEMA said "the shape and construction of electronic cigarettes can make them [more likely than other products with lithium-ion batteries] to behave like "flaming rockets" when a battery fails".

"We've put the caution out before", Kiklas said.

Unregulated devices usually come without built-in technology to automatically shut down when overheated.

Replace the batteries if they get damaged or wet.
