Salma Hayek calls for male stars to take pay cuts for equality

Cannes 2018: Hayek calls on male stars to take pay cuts

In a discussion with the Radio Times, Cumberbatch called on male actors to step up to the plate and refuse to take more money than what their female counterparts were being paid, even going as far as to reject work outright. "You had a good run but it is time now to be generous with the actresses".

The Mexican-born star subsequently claimed that one way to achieve equality would be for actors to spurn "inflated fees". "If the movie's budget is $10 million, the (male) actor has to understand that if he is making $9.7 million, it is going to be hard for equality", Hayek added. But she also had a warning for these women: "they still want to pay you the exploitative salary they paid you before".

"We all have to be part of the adjustment".

At the Cannes film festival American actress appeared in a blue dress with a deep neckline accentuating her ample bosom.

Some are skeptical that reducing men's pay is the way to gender parity, saying that in most industries, the pay gap emerges when men get high-skilled jobs and when women take time away from the job market to have children.

While he was producing the 2002 film "Frida", in which Hayek starred, Weinstein insisted that she add an unscripted sex scene with another woman, complete with full-frontal nudity.

In December, Hayek joined the list of more than 40 women who came forward with allegations of sexual harassment against Weinstein. Weinstein at the time issued a lengthy statement of denial.

"He only responded to two women, two women of color", Hayek said. "So he went back attacking the two women of color, in hopes of discrediting. if he could discredit us, which would be easier for the audience, the readers, to not believe us, he could then maybe discredit the rest".

Hayek went on, "It's a proven fact that women of colour are less listened to".

The 51-year-old said the protest, against female underrepresentation at Cannes and beyond, had been "very meaningful ... as a woman [who] has had to go through all the struggles that all women have to go through".
