Tesla drops in premarket after Musk lets loose on call

"Boring, bonehead questions are not cool", he snapped at one analyst, who inquired about capital expenditures.

Telsa Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and its CEO Elon Musk find themselves in the crosshairs of securities analysts after the electric vehicle maker raised more cash-burn concerns and its top executive got testy during a conference call that analysts described as "contentious" and "truly weird". "I think that if people are concerned about volatility they should not buy our stock", Musk said on a conference call with investors, according to TheStreet. "The truth is you're not a real company until you are, frankly".

The Company Tesla Inc. finished with a record loss in the first quarter of 2018, at $710 million, while during the same period past year, the net loss was $330 million. Musk then shut down another analyst for asking what he determined silly and "dry" questions.

Shareholders seemed to be displeased by Mr Musk's announcement that production of the more affordable Model Y SUV will not start next year, as previously reported, but in 2020. That's also the level needed for Tesla to make money.

He also said it would not be produced at Tesla's main factory in Fremont, California.

Strong sales of the auto are key to generating cash to pay operating expenses, fund capital spending and make upcoming debt payments. S&P adjusted the company's credit down to a negative B rating in April 2017 - it also holds a negative outlook for Tesla going forward. And more skepticism is drawn from recent challenges, which include criticism of its product quality after a recall of over 100,000 units of Model S due to faulty power steering and fatal Model X autopilot crash and a fresh $2 billion patent infringement lawsuit filed by startup Nikola. Also, Tesla wants to hit 25% gross for its Model 3 next year, while its weekly production is now at 2,270.

"In particular the number of third-party companies we're using has gotten out of control".

He admitted that Tesla made a mistake by adding too much automation too quickly at the factory.

Tesla claims that it has largely overcome production bottlenecks, with Musk vowing a dramatic turnaround that would reverse losses and generate positive cash flow in just a few months.

Excluding items, Tesla had a loss of $3.35 (roughly Rs. 220) per share.

Automotive revenue rose only 1 percent from the prior quarter to $2.74 billion (roughly Rs. 18,300 crores). Net loss in October-December increased to $675 million compared to c $121 million for the same period in 2016. Analysts had expected a loss of $3.58 per share, according to Thomson Reuters. Revenue exceeded estimates of $3.28 billion.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated the amount of Tesla's cash burn last quarter.

In after-hours trading, as the call unfolded, Tesla stock dropped more than 5% in just 20 minutes, landing around $284.

JPMorgan cut Tesla's price target to US$180 from US$185 after the call with Musk. At the end of past year the company had a total of $9.5 billion in long-term debt.

The company maintains that the scaling up of production will ensure it returns to profitability during the autumn. "We wonder what spending is deferred and for how long", CFRA analyst Efraim Levy wrote in a note to investors. Toward the finish of the central quarter, there were more than 450,000 bookings for the Model 3, which as we as a whole know has had a moderate rollout.

"Although the current leadership structure, in which the positions of Chairman and CEO are held by one person, could provide an effective leadership for Tesla at the early stage, now in this much more highly competitive and rapidly changing technology industry, it is more and more hard to oversee Tesla's business and senior management (especially to minimize any potential conflicts) that may result from combining the positions of CEO and Chairman", Zhao in his proposal.
