Trump says North Korea summit could still happen

GETTYDonald Trump has hinted that the North Korea summit could still be

"Everybody plays games", said Trump, who often boasts about his own negotiating tactics and skill.

Trump tweeted later Friday that the summit, if it does happen, will likely take place June 12 in Singapore, as originally planned. "They very much want to do it". On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha that, despite Trump pulling out of the summit, the U.S.

The tone from both sides was warmer on Friday.

"We reiterate to the USA that there is a willingness to sit down at any time, in any way, to solve the problem", a top North Korean official said.

Trump welcomed North Korea's statement on Friday that it was still open to talks with the United States after Trump called off a summit with leader Kim Jong Un, saying he still held out hopes for peace. "Soak it up: we'll probably never see anything like this again".

In their first summit in April, Kim and Moon announced vague aspirations for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and permanent peace, which Seoul has tried to sell as a meaningful breakthrough to set up the summit with Trump. The recent statements also made clear Pyongyang would not accept the United States' demands for its "unilateral" denuclearization.

Politico magazine reported that an advance team of 30 White House and State Department officials was preparing to leave for Singapore later this weekend. "Kim Jong-un wants to use his nuclear weapons to extort money from the outside world" like his father and his grandfather did in previous rounds of negotiations. The cold, hard truth is that North Korea has offered talks followed by months and sometimes years of fruitless efforts to drive towards a bargain many times in the past.

Mr Pompeo added that the summit was canceled because North Korea did not respond to repeated USA requests to discuss the logistics of the meeting, and that the country's attitude began to sour after he secured the release of three American prisoners held there during his visit.

The senior US official said the North violated a pledge to allow worldwide inspectors to monitor the supposed implosion of the test site.

Third, Trump must explain to Kim that there will be no letup in planned U.S. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid overshadowing Trump's comments Thursday.

"Only Donald Trump could cancel a summit with Kim Jong-un in the morning and then have a meeting with Sylvester Stallone later in the day", Kimmel said.

The U.S. attitude is "too condescending and coercive", Kim said.

North Korea's Vice-Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan said Trump's cancellation decision was "extremely regrettable".

"I think the relatively mild language of the North Koreans at this point in time, it really also makes them look more reasonable and sort of outshines the Trump administration and sort of offsets the erratic and kind of Trump's letter, his sort of stream of consciousness letter to cancel the meeting", she said.

Trump sent a letter Thursday canceling the denuclearization talks after North Korean officials insulted Vice President Mike Pence's intelligence and reportedly became unresponsive to the summit planning process.

As news of Trump's decision to cancel the summit with Kim spread through Seoul, many reacted with anger, including a handful of people who protested near the US embassy.

Shortly before Mr Trump's tweet, the South Korean presidency said it was thankful that the "summit embers are not put out and it is coming back to life". The presidential Blue House did not immediately provide more details.
