Trump to pardon Dinesh D'Souza

Trump To Grant

In 2014, D'Souza pleaded guilty after reimbursing two straw donors who contributed to Wendy Long's 2012 campaign for the U.S. Senate.

"He's worked this process through the White House counsel and felt that it was appropriate to pardon Dinesh D'Souza", Shah said. "He was treated very unfairly by our government!" the president tweeted.

D'Souza also personally contributed $10,000 to the campaign of Republican Wendy Long, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate in NY in 2012.

D'Souza, who made the documentary "2016: Obama's America", entered the plea a week after the federal judge overseeing his case rejected his claim that he was selectively prosecuted.

By pardoning Dinesh D'Souza, President Trump is undermining the rule of law by pardoning a political supporter who is an unapologetic convicted felon.

Trump also said he might commute the 14-year prison sentence of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat convicted of corruption charges, and was considering pardoning a woman convicted of a drug-related charge after reality TV star Kim Kardashian discussed the case with him on Wednesday.

"President Trump's latest pardon makes crystal clear his willingness to use his pardon power to thwart the cause of justice, rather than advance it", Underwood said in a statement.

Though Trump said no one had asked him to pardon D'Souza, a source familiar with how things unfolded told CNN that Sen.

D'Souza is a best-selling author of several books on politics and the influence of religion on American society, AFP reported. D'Souza said as much as recently as 2017.

D'Souza was sentenced to five years of probation, including eight months living under supervision in a halfway house and a $30,000 fine.

He has previously launched campaigns against both Obama and the then-presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed Thursday that Trump's pardon of D'Souza did not go through the department's Office of Pardon Attorney.

Earlier this month, The New York Post's Anna Sanders published allegations that Rosie O'Donnell had violated campaign finance law no fewer than five times, with donations much larger in size than D'Souza's.
