UFC 224 Results: Lyoto Machida Uses Karate to Retire Vitor Belfort

Image PA

Belfort appeared to be out cold from the kick, and Machida picked up his second straight win with the highlight reel finish.

Machida needed less than two full rounds to finish his fellow countrymen with a nasty head-kick that put an end to Belfort's night, closing the final chapter of a UFC career that's had more than its share of unexpected ups and downs.

No ground and pound needed, the kick was so clean that Belfort was done and dusted.

In the build-up to his clash with his fellow future Hall of Famer, Belfort repeatedly hinted that retirement was right around the corner. It just so happened that fight was to be the last in Belfort's career, and he confirmed his retirement after the bout in a post-fight interview, leaving his gloves in the Octagon. Machida called out former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping to square off with him next.

It was also a mirror image of the kick that Anderson Silva used to knock Belfort out at UFC 126. "I want to thank my team, Tristar".

We're sure Bisping is under no illusions about his abilities as a title-threat these days and for what it's worth, this could well be the fight to make - if all of the relevant pieces fall into place. Do you think that Bisping will take this fight before calling it a career? I would like to fight Michael Bisping.

In the second round both fighters came out circling the center of the octagon again for only 10 to 15 seconds when Lyoto Machida starting turning his leg as if he was going to throw a front high kick, and out of nowhere he threw a front kick with his back leg straight to Vitor Belfort's chin, knocking him out. "He might retire sometime soon, I could retire sometime soon, and people asked for that fight, so it's a fight that interests me".
