US following through on 25 percent Chinese tariff

Chinese and U.S. flags are set up for a signing ceremony during a visit by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao at China's Ministry of Transport in Beijing China

"The United States will request that China remove all of its many trade barriers, including non-monetary trade barriers, which make it both hard and unfair to do business there".

The White House also said new restrictions on Chinese investment and enhanced export controls will be announced by June 30, with implementation soon after.

The final list of items subject to the new tariffs will be released on June 15, with formal imposition of these duties occurring a few days later.

The administration laid out a list of abusive trading actions by China - including placing high tariffs on USA goods and banning some imports - that have led to America's $375 billion trade deficit in 2017.

The statement added. "This is obviously contrary to the consensus reached between the two sides in Washington not long ago".

Trump ordered the tariffs in March in response to what he called "tremendous intellectual property theft" by China, identified in a Section 301 trade investigation launched last summer.

"The United States will impose a 25 per cent tariff on Dollars 50 billion of goods imported from China containing industrially significant technology, including those related to the "Made in China 2025" programme", the White House said in a statement.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will visit China from June 2-4, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday, without giving further details.

Trump has bemoaned the massive USA trade deficit with China as evidence that Beijing has been complicit in abusive trading practices.

"The United States will request that tariffs and taxes between the two countries be reciprocal in nature and value".

The latest signal from the White House sounds like the more hawkish wing of Trump's trade team is trying to amplify its hard line, after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said this month that any talk of a trade war was suspended for now.

Tensions between the US and China may have been reduced somewhat by Trump's action last week to ease sanctions that threatened the viability of Chinese telecom giant ZTE, in response to a personal request from President Xi Jinping.

The Trump administration previously announced a list of Chinese products affected by the tariff primarily focused on electronics, aerospace and machinery products.
