USA officials in North Korea to prepare for United States summit

Kim Jong-un committed to complete denuclearisation, says Moon Jae-in after North-South 'surprise' summit

Mr Moon said North Korea and the United States will soon start working-level talks to prepare for the Kim-Trump summit.

Kim was probably headed to NY, where North Korea has a mission to the United Nations, rather than to Washington because it was easier for him to get a visa there, another USA diplomat said.

"Remember that when Trump came into office, it was great-power competition - with Russian Federation and China but mostly with China - that was going to be the priority and that was the focus of every national security document the new administration put out", says Harry Kazianis, director of defense studies and a Northeast Asia expert at the Center for the National Interest in Washington.

Despite Kim's apparent eagerness for a summit with Trump, there are lingering doubts on whether he would ever agree to fully relinquish his nuclear weapons when he may see them as his only guarantee of survival.

"During the South Korea-U.S. summit, President Trump said the U.S.is willing to clearly put an end to hostile relations (between the U.S. and North Korea) and help (the North) achieve economic prosperity if North Korea conducts denuclearization", he said.

In New York, Kim Yong Chol is expected to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He arrived in Beijing on Tuesday as there's no direct flight between North Korea and the USA amid speculation that he might have met with Chinese officials. They later reported that Kim changed his flight to go to NY on Wednesday.

He says Japan also wants to see Pyongyang's ballistic missiles dismantled and the abduction of Japanese citizens to North Korea addressed.

CNN reported Monday that Trump is pressuring his staff to hold the summit on June 12 as scheduled despite concerns that an agreement is a long way off. Kim Young Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to NY.

Earlier, the U.S. State Department said U.S. and North Korean officials had met at Panmunjom, a village in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that runs along the heavily armed border between North and South Korea.

Kim Yong Chol will be the most senior North Korean on U.S. soil since Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok met then-president Bill Clinton in 2000.

But she stopped short of saying the meeting had been reinstated after Trump canceled it last week in a letter to Kim, citing "open hostility" in North Korean statements. Moon said Kim is still committed to "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

Trump withdrew from a planned June 12 Singapore summit with Kim last Thursday, then quickly announced that the meeting could get back on track.

The Washington Post, citing a person familiar with the arrangements, said Sung Kim, a former USA ambassador to South Korea and former nuclear negotiator with the North, was leading the preparations on the US side.

"There are meetings going on as we speak", Trump said.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that since the letter, "the North Koreans have been engaging" with the U.S.

The Heritage Foundation's Bruce Klingner, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst on the Koreas, tells NPR's Elise Hu that the USA and North Korea still are not aligned on a definition of denuclearization.
