Which Starbucks locations are closed for racial-bias training May 29?

READ MORE A new policy at Starbucks People can sit without buying anything

Starbucks will close all of its more than 8,000 US stores for a portion of Tuesday afternoon so its employees can undergo racial bias and sensitivity training in the wake of a confrontation with two black customers at one of its Philadelphia locations.

Last month, a white store manager at a Philadelphia-based Starbucks location called the police on two black men who were sitting in the store and had not yet purchased anything. Participating stores will close around 2 p.m.to 3 pm, local time. About 7,000 licensed Starbucks stores found in hotels, airports, college campuses, commercial buildings and grocery stores have the option to remain open.

Perception executive director Alexis McGill Johnson told Associated Press that the aim of anti-bias training is not to "say you're a bad person because you have a stereotype about a group, but say this is why your brain may have these stereotypes". Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson, Chairman Howard Schultz and musician and activist Common will serve as virtual guides.

Calvin Lai, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences at Washington University, also says anti-bias training can sometimes backfire. The half-day closure was announced after video of police arresting two black men in a Philadelphia Starbucks in April, caused outrage. The customers said they were waiting for another man to arrive.

The training is meant to help Starbucks navigate the challenges of being the "third place" that its leaders have often spoken about - the place where people spend time outside of work and their home. Ifill and her fellow unpaid adviser, Heather McGhee, the president of the public policy organization Demos, will issue a report outlining a comprehensive set of issues they believe the company must address.

As for her role in the training, Ifill said her goal was to ensure "that what they do undertake is rigorous and is likely to produce real results". "We've made it clear that we won't be a rubber stamp to validate their programming", McGhee said.

"Our hope is that these learning sessions and discussions will make a difference within and beyond our stores", Starbucks executive vice president, U.S. Retail, Rossann Williams said.

The company offered specific guidelines in a document shared with employees. The coffee chain is asking customers to behave in a way that "maintains a warm and welcoming environment".

Starbucks is closing 8,000 stores for anti-bias training on May 29, but you can still get your beloved java fix.
