This year's World Press Freedom Day theme has sparked off some interesting discussions, particularly since it came about a week after the Reporters Without Borders published its 2018 World Press Freedom Index, ranking 180 countries according to the level of Freedom available to journalists. It also underlines the role that media play as champions of accountability and the rule of law. In a series of tweets, Modi said that a free Press was necessary to make a democracy stronger and applauded those working tirelessly to uphold Freedom of Press.

MATT says it has noted as well that Trinidad and Tobago achieved a press freedom rating higher than several countries in the report conducted by global non-profit organisation, Reporters Without Borders.

"My administration is committed to protecting the freedom of expression, a right enshrined in our Provisional Constitution", he said. From worldwide broadcasters that bring the world into our homes, to local newspapers that empower us to shape the communities we live in - we know that a free press helps build stronger and healthier societies.

Incidentally, the two countries are noted for gross rights abuse against journalists in the line of their work.

The UN General Assembly declared 3 May to be the "World Press Freedom Day" to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press. "I would once again like to appreciate the proactive role of everyone on social media for their commendable work towards safeguarding the freedom of press and expression", he added.

Stressing that a positively critical media is vital to national development and the growth of our democracy, the president stated that a media that cavils would only generate unwarranted tension in a plural society like ours.

What does Nigeria need right now?

"Good journalism seeks the truth and holds the powerful accountable".

"It is important to call the attention of all on a day like this that a nation whose economy does not and can not support the economy of its media industry can not thumb its chest that its press is free".
