Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade's deaths are part of a growing problem in the US

CDC: US suicide rates have climbed dramatically

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released today says Montana's rate is more than twice the national average.

Research shows suicides are up in nearly every state across the country.

"It's not just a mental health concern", says Deborah Stone, a behavioral scientist at the CDC and the lead author of the new study.

Bourdain's death was caused by suicide.

The report showed an overall 25.4 percent increase nationally during the period, with only one state -- Nevada -- seeing a decrease in its rate. Nevada was the only state that saw no increase, and DE saw the smallest increase which was 5.9 percent. Publicity surrounding a suicide has been repeatedly and definitively linked to a subsequent increase in suicide, especially among young people.

Some factors that contribute to suicide are relationship problems, physical health problems, loss of housing, and a crisis from the past.

"None of this is surprising information, which is not to trivialize its importance".

If you know someone who is thinking about suicide, you should not leave them by themselves.

Opioids were present in 31 percent of those who died by suicide.

In North Dakota, the rate jumped more than 57 percent.

"The most common method was firearm, followed by hanging or suffocation, followed by poisoning", Schuchat said.

Kaslow is particularly concerned about what's emerged with suicide among women. "The conversation about firearms and suicide doesn't have to be a debate about the Second Amendment".

"We need to talk about mental illness as a real thing and do not be judgmental, have compassion".

"We have a long way to go to strengthen our community and health systems to make sure when someone is at risk we get them to care", said Jerry Reed, an executive committee member of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. "And there's good research to support that".

Folks at the Crisis Center in Birmingham say whenever a public figure takes their life it can certainly cause others who may have been considering it to think about it even more. "I didn't know them until later on when I thought back about it", said Culbreath.

The series addresses a public health topic each month.

In Connecticut, 100 adults between age 50 to 59 died by suicide a year ago, almost twice the reported number in 2007. What impact might news coverage of a suicide have on other people's trying or committing suicide?

The association's president, Julie Cerel, added that suicide rates were disproportionate among middle-aged men.
