AT&T debuts their skinny Watch TV service to fend off Sling TV

AT&T's latest unlimited plans include a new live TV service

In fact, in an increasingly crowded landscape for streaming services, AT&T WatchTV most closely resembles Philo TV, another low-priced, sports-free option that costs $16 a month.

The new service will offer 31 channels at launch, including CNN, TBS and TNT, all part of Time Warner's Turner networks. AT&T completed its acquisition of Time Warner earlier this year.

The WatchTV service is a cable-like package of more than 30 TV channels delivered over the internet, similar to Sling TV, PlayStation Vue and AT&T's own DirecTV Now.

The service launches next week, with the introduction of two new unlimited mobile service plans, AT&T Unlimited &More and AT&T Unlimited & More Premium.

The new live TV service will automatically be bundled with AT&T's two newest unlimited plans.

AT&T says it will have more information about the standalone $15-a-month WatchTV service soon.

With WatchTV, subscribers to AT&T's Premium service will get 30 channels of live TV, 15,000 TV shows and movies on demand and the option to add one f several premium services - either HBO, Showtime, Starz or a music streaming service like Amazon Music or Pandora Premium - for no extra charge.

More news: Beware: This kind of weed can cause burns and blindness

WatchTV is what's known as a skinny bundle, stripping out the local networks and sports channels for more entertainment-focused options.

Pricing for the AT&T Unlimited &More Premium service starts at $80 a month for a single phone line. The merger was held up in court for months after the Justice Department tried to block it, claiming that the combination would harm competition and raise prices for consumers. Customers also get a $15 credit toward DirecTV, DirecTV Now or U-Verse TV, alongside 15 GB of tethering.

Unlimited & More Premium costs $80 a month, with four lines available for $190.

In addition to WatchTV, AT&T will offer other video services to its wireless customers.

People who don't subscribe to one of AT&T's new wireless plans must pay $15 per month for WatchTV.

AT&T's new plans replace its previous plans, though customers can remain on the plan they now have.
