Australians will no longer be able to order from Amazon’s American site

Amazon geoblocks Australia from U.S. site as tax change kicks in

Under the new GST collection laws, online retailers like Amazon will be forced to apply the 10 percent GST to goods purchased on worldwide sites and shipped to Australia.

From that date, Australia will impose a 10 percent consumption tax on online retailers for goods bought from overseas sites and shipped to Australia.

It was the move we all dreaded was coming: Australian shoppers will no longer be able to shop on Amazon's USA site as the company shifts focus to its local offering.

After that date, Aussie customers who attempt to visit the United States version of Amazon or any of Amazon's overseas sites will find themselves redirected to Amazon's Australian site, which offers a much smaller selection of items.

The move will drive traffic to Amazon's Australian website, which has drawn criticism for a thin product range and uncompetitive prices since it began taking orders in December.

Under new GST collection laws, online retailers will be forced to apply the 10 percent GST to goods purchased on worldwide sites and shipped to Australia.

Both eBay and Amazon previously indicated that they may have to block Australian buyers due to the changes - and Amazon today confirmed that it would redirect Australian customers from its global sites to Amazon.com.au.

Amazon said Australian customers will still be able to buy products sold by Amazon US on the Amazon Global Store.

Australian users weren't happy with their government's decision, and are calling the GST as the "Amazon tax".

Labor's digital economy spokesman Ed Husic said the treasurer should have sat down with Amazon and other retailers earlier to talk through the changes.

But even with the changes, the number of products available will be a fraction of what's on sale globally.

Last year, it was announced that Aussies would have to pay GST on all overseas purchases from July 1, 2018, leaving the country's online shopping future uncertain in the process.

"A level playing field will help Australian businesses grow and create more jobs and opportunities".

The "Global Store" will offer some 4 million items, in addition to the 60 million products previously offered at Amazon.com.au, the spokesperson said.
