Chelsea for sale? Roman Abramovich puts £1bn Stamford Bridge plans on hold

Chelsea FC news Blues put new stadium project on hold

Israel's ambassador to Russia Gary Koren said Friday that he hoped Chelsea football club's Russian owner Roman Abramovich would invest in "pitiful" Israel soccer after he received Israeli citizenship this week.

Lendlease, Sir Robert McAlpine, Multiplex, and Mace, which is now building Tottenham Hotspur's £800m stadium in time for the new Premier League season, had all been identified as possible main contractors for the job had it gone ahead.

And Birch, responsible for selling Chelsea to Russian Abramovich, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I wasn't really surprised (by the news) because it's obviously linked to the visa situation".

The west London club had been expected to press on with the construction of its new 60,000 seat stadium after a series of hold ups, with a completion date set for the start of the 2023/24 season.

He has been forced to seek Israeli citizenship to regain entry to the United Kingdom as part of the country's response to the Salisbury nerve attack in March.

The club said that it does not have an update on the time frame to reconsider the decision, and that the decision was made "due to the current unfavourable investment climate".

The club claim that the plans have been put on hold due to "the current unfavourable investment climate".

The dad-of-seven became the owner of the companies that control Chelsea in June 2003. But according to the Jerusalem Post yesterday he has withdrawn his application for an investor visa in the UK.

A clause in Sarri's contract that would allow him to leave Napoli for £7m expires at midnight on Thursday, but Chelsea have so far been unmoved by that particular deadline.

Chelsea have had talks with former Paris St-Germain coach Laurent Blanc as a possible alternative.

A spokesman for Abramovich was not immediately available for comment.
