Kim summit to be held at luxury resort on Singapore's Sentosa Island

Ms Sanders called the letter that top North Korean official Kim Yong-chol delivered from Kim Jong-un to Mr Trump on Friday "interesting" but wouldn't comment on its contents.

Two of the most maverick leaders of the world, US President Donald Trump and North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un are finally meeting, the White House confirmed on Monday night.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that planning continues for the historic summit in Singapore and that negotiators from the United States and North Korea are meeting at the Demilitarized Zone to lay the groundwork. The New York Post reported Tuesday that Rodman will be traveling to Singapore to attend the summit between Kim and President Donald Trump.

Asked if the USA would continue with Mr Trump's policy of placing "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang, Ms Sanders said that view had not changed.

The denuclearization timeframe had been the key point of contention.

Publicly, the cost of dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapons program, and who will cover it, has yet to be discussed by the concerned countries.

The North, meanwhile, has noted possible stumbling blocks for the talks, including denunciations of upcoming military exercises involving the United States and South Korea.

"I can tell you the president has been receiving daily briefings on North Korea from his national security team", said Sanders. Cheong Wa Dae and the foreign ministry have stated that a trip to Singapore by Moon has not been decided.

The two sides could also discuss the issue of declaring a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War, which is widely seen as the first step that the USA could take to give the North a security guarantee.

Trump and Kim will meet at a luxury resort on Sentosa Island for nuclear talks next week in Singapore, the White House said Tuesday.

Ken Gause, director of the International Affairs Group at CNA, said: "If Kim Jong Un is set on making peace with the USA and South Korea and dealing away at least part of the nuclear programme, he will have to put the KPA's influence in a box and keep it there".

Experts have voiced concern that despite Trump's claim to be the world's greatest dealmaker, he knows little about North Korea, arms control or global diplomacy.

"We're not going to go in and sign something on June 12th and we never were". Pyongyang sees its nuclear weapons as vital to its survival but Kim has said he plans to focus on economic development.

"To have a summit with a US President is something that many countries aspire to".

"In return, the USA seems to be offering to accept more of the North's demands such as declaring an end to the Korean War and taking a step-by-step approach in the denuclearization process", he said.
