Manchester United fans enthralled by Marcus Rashford stunner against Costa Rica

Costa Rica finished above England in their 2014 World Cup group

England manager Gareth Southgate was giving no clues as to his starting lineup for England's opening World Cup game but the performance of striker Marcus Rashford in Thursday's 2-0 win over Costa Rica certainly gave him food for thought.

Next up for England will be their World Cup opener against Tunisia on June 18th, so here are five things we learned from their final World Cup warm-up match.

England will travel to Russian Federation on Tuesday on a wave of renewed sense of national optimism after Gareth Southgate's side signed off their World Cup preparation with two impressive victories. But if it means seeing more goals like that of Rashford's tonight, then I'm all for it.

Rashford had a disappointing end to United's Premier League season, and Southgate felt he may have been trying too hard.

The win was wrapped up in the 76th minute when substitute Welbeck, for some a surprise choice in England's World Cup squad, stooped to head in a Dele Alli cross.

"The first goal was a wonderful, wonderful strike and we've got real competition for places".

England were in the ascendancy and Rashford was exciting the Yorkshire crowd with a number of flashy touches and silky skills.

Southgate described Rashford's strike as "world-class", and added: "Rashford played with a real swagger tonight... his performance wasn't ideal, but he was enjoying his football and that was good to see".

"I thought his link-up was good".

'You work on them [goals] in training every day and when one comes up in a game it's a reward, ' said Rashford.

"I feel in good physical form leading up to the tournament. We sometimes forget how old he is".

This is what England need, sending the team up and down the country, playing their home games in front of all members of their fanbase - not just those who live in London and tourists visiting - to bring excitement back into the national game.

Costa Rica face tournament favourites Brazil as well as Serbia and Switzerland in Group E, and will need to show far more ambition once they get to Russian Federation if they are to replicate their heroics of four years ago. Anything is possible and we have to go there with the highest expectations'.
