Meghan Markle Joins Royal Family on Palace Balcony

Prince Charles

Meghan's trip with the Queen arrives less than a month after she tied the knot to Prince Harry, but Kate Middleton didn't have her first solo event with Her Majesty until nine months after her royal wedding, The Telegraph reports.

Prince Philip, who retired from public duties a year ago, did not attend the ceremony that involves more than 1,400 soldiers, 400 musicians and 200 horses.

The duke and duchess, who married three weeks ago, made the short trip from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade in a horse-drawn carriage as royal fans lining the Mall cheered and waved.

The entire royal family, including for the first time Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was to gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at the conclusion of the parade to watch a fly-over by the Royal Air Force.

This is the first time Markle has been photographed this many members of the royal family.

In recent years, the duke has been caricatured as a gruff old stick-in-the-mud, making headlines with his politically incorrect ice-breakers when meeting the public.

"I'm quite proud and I know that a lot of other people are proud of me as well", he told the broadcaster. Now, royals like the Queen, Prince Philip, and Duchess Camilla have access to the nine-car vehicle, but Prince Charles uses it the most.

William and Catherine's older children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, enjoyed the spectacle from the balcony, but the couple's third child, 6-week-old Prince Louis, didn't make an appearance.

However, he did attend the wedding of his grandson Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle on May 19, despite undergoing a hip replacement on April 4.

They also matched their outfits for the 2016 ceremony, and later that year during a visit to Canada.
