Qualcomm reveals Snapdragon 850 Mobile Compute Platform for Windows 10 devices

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 850 is a processor built with laptops in mind

As we reported few days back, Qualcomm today officially announced the Snapdragon 850 mobile platform for Windows 10 Always Connected PCs.

The Snapdragon 850 succeeds the Snapdragon 835, and promises increased performance, improved battery life, and better connectivity.

Qualcomm revealed the platform at Computex yesterday. This is clearly covering the first-generation devices powered by Snapdragon 835, such as the one we reviewed a while ago.

Beyond core performance, the Snapdragon 850 also comes with a new Snapdragon x20 LTE modem, allowing PCs to tap into the 10MHz Licensed LTE band for greater global connectivity. Included in the skill set is a threefold bump in artificial intelligence performance, the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem for 1.2Gbps maximum throughput potential on cellular networks. But a partnership between Microsoft and Qualcomm has seen the two firms work on tickling Windows into working on ARM-based chip architecture rather than the normal x86 architecture found in Intel and AMD processors. AptX HD support means you can utilize supported wireless headphones and get above Bluetooth audio quality as well - something that Sebastian has tested and approved. All presumably running on Windows 10.

In the realm of laptop-specific features, there's really not much to go on aside from the fact that Qualcomm is now promising native support in Windows 10 for ARM64 applications via the 64-bit Win32 SDK. "This collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and their Snapdragon 850 Mobile Compute Platform will allow us to provide always on, always connected mobile computing experiences for our customers". It also does not change the picture for app compatibility, as it remains a software-level development task, and something that Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Arm should be spending a lot more time on in the coming months.

Qualcomm expects vendors to start offering products based on the Snapdragon 850 in the 2018 holiday season.
