Singapore declares 'special event area' for Trump-Kim summit

Singapore has designated a central region of the wealthy city state as a "special event area" from June 10 to 14 for a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the government said on Monday.

The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was commenting on a report by South Korea's Yonhap news agency that all three of the North's top military officials were believed to have been replaced.

But, if confirmed, the moves raise two contrasting scenarios: part of an ongoing reorganization in military leadership by Kim, or possibly a far-reaching intervention to bring in younger military overseers to replace older ranks possibly at odds with his outreach to the United States and its ally South Korea.

The others dismissed, according to Yonhap, were defense chief Pak Yong Sik and Kim Jong Gak, director of the political bureau of the North Korean army.

"The optics are horrendous given that Kim Jong-un is trying to posture as a good guy", Sue Mi Terry, the Korea chair at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington told the New York Times.

Reuters reported that us officials feel that there was disagreement within the North Korean military as to how Kim should work with Washington and Seoul.

North Korean delegates led by Kim Chang-son, Kim Jong-un's de facto chief of staff, have also stayed at the Fullerton.

Since the North signalled at the start of this year that it was open to a rapprochement with the South, with which it is still technically at war, Mr Kim has met Chinese President Xi Jinping, South Korea's Moon Jae-in and has floated a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin this year.

But after meeting with a senior North Korean leader Friday, Trump seemed to walk back that approach.

North Korea will not get any sanctions relief until it has demonstrated "irreversible" steps to denuclearization, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Sunday, June 3.

In 2016, the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, released a report that placed gene editing technology on a par with nuclear weapons as a threat to U.S. national security.

Kim Jong Un is also likely expecting to receive more worldwide economic aid and investment soon as part of the ongoing talks and he wants to prevent corruption that plagued some past projects, Madden said.

North Korean delegates to the preparatory talks for a summit with the USA leave the Fullerton Hotel in Singapore on Sunday.

That official said United States negotiators' efforts to press for definitions of immediate, comprehensive, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation by North Korea had run into opposition from the White House.
