The XFL Just Named The Commissioner Of Its League

Oliver Luck left is leaving his post at the NCAA to join the XFL

Oliver Luck, the father of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, is reportedly leaving his job as an NCAA executive vice president to join Vince McMahon's XFL.

It's not a gimmick. He's also been president of NFL Europe and athletic director of West Virginia, where he played football during his college years.

The recently rebooted XFL made what was seen as a pretty big stride toward respectability Tuesday, announcing that Oliver Luck would become the league's first commissioner and CEO.

Remember, the XFL is doing away with all the shtick it used to have. and is trying to be legit. The XFL previously existed for just one season back in 2001.

The new XFL will reimagine football for the 21st century when it kicks off in early 2020.

A source familiar with Luck's decision making told Yahoo Sports that Luck's move is based primarily on the "special opportunity" of being involved with the launch of a professional football league.

"Vince and others have really looked clear-eyed at the original XFL and acknowledged there wasn't enough focus put on the game itself", Luck said.

Luck was also the first president and general manager of Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo, where he helped the team win back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007. "His vision and insight have been invaluable to our schools and the national office". Eight teams will play a 10-game schedule, and a four-team playoff will determine the champion.

McMahon has said his role as founder and chairman of the XFL would not affect his roles with the WWE - whether in the office or creatively.

"Each contest will be a high profile event with tens of thousands of fans, featuring innovative elements that bring them closer to the players and the game they love".
