Trump Announces Pardon for Racist Right-Wing Propagandist D'Souza

Trump pardons Dinesh D’Souza, conservative agitator who pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud

"President Trump told me he felt I had been treated very unfairly and he felt that I was an important voice for America", D'Souza said.

"What my case shows in miniature is how Obama, and Hillary, too, have gangster-ized US politics", he said. Then-Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who prosecuted the case, emphatically denied any political motivation. "But I thought that he was treated unfairly", Mr. Trump said. "So it was a move of ambition as I understand it".

Before he started making documentaries, D'Souza was a prominent conservative writer and pundit, and was briefly president of a Christian college in NY. He wrote the bestsellers "The Roots of Obama's Rage" in 2010 and "America: Imagine a World Without Her" this year, and in 2012 co-directed the film "2016: Obama's America".

"Bravo! @realDonaldTrump Dinesh was the subject of a political prosecution, brazenly targeted by the Obama administration bc of his political views", Cruz said Thursday in a tweet.

"Obama and his stooges tried to extinguish my American dream & destroy my faith in America".

Trump told reporters that he had spoken personally with D'Souza 'for three minutes last night, ' adding that 'he nearly had a heart attack'.

Mr. D'Souza, who has written several books, thanked Mr. Trump for the pardon.

D'Souza said in one of the tweets that it was the "worst news since their parents told them to get summer jobs". Instead, he was sentenced to five years of probation and eight months in a "community confinement center" and ordered to pay a $30,000 fine.

"If you look at what he said he said something to the effect like what do I get", Trump said. An outspoken conservative since his undergraduate days at Dartmouth College in the early 1980s, D'Souza - born in Mumbai to an Indian Catholic family - was a onetime advisor in the Ronald Reagan White House.

D'Souza never received any jail time. Though he claims that decision was not because of Comey's investigation into collusion between Russian Federation officials and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, the commander-in-chief told NBC News in May that he considered "this Russian Federation thing" before firing.

"As our office's record reflects, we will investigate and prosecute violations of federal law, particularly those that undermine the integrity of the democratic electoral process, without regard to the defendant's political persuasion or party affiliation", he said in 2014.

Previously Trump has pardoned former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, a Trump supporter convicted of criminal contempt of court, the late boxer Jack Johnson and a former sailor, Kristian Mark Saucier, who was convicted of unauthorized use of classified information.

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-Manhattan), a top member of the Judiciary Committee, tweeted that Trump wants "to send a message that silence will be rewarded" to those being contacted by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.
