Trump Threatens Harley-Davidson 'Will Be Taxed Like Never Before!'

Harley-Davidson to take big hit from EU tariffs

The poster boy of US President Donald Trump's trade war - Harley-Davidson - just embarrassed him by deciding to take part of its manufacturing out of the US. "If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit!", the president wrote on his account.

"The problem isn't that Harley is unpatriotic - it's that tariffs are stupid; they're tax increases on Americans and they don't work", he said.

Harley announced in January that it was closing its 20-year-old final assembly plant in Kansas City, Missouri, which employed around 800 workers, and consolidating it into its facility in York, Pennsylvania.

"Good luck to Republicans running on the Trump tariffs in November", the editorial board wrote in a new op-ed. But Trump says that's just an excuse. He threatened to hit the company with an unspecified tax if it attempted to sell motorcycles made outside the USA back into the country.

I had Harley-Davidson officials over to the White House, I chided them about tariffs in other countries, like India, being too high. Companies are now coming back to America.

Chief Executive Officer Matt Levatich said in April that the factory in Thailand was a "Plan B" that Harley employed after the USA abandoned the 11-country Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade agreement Trump withdrew from past year.

But Harley-Davidson said last week that European Union tariffs on motorcycles exported from the USA went from 6 to 31 percent, adding about $2,200 per average motorcycle exported from the US into European Union countries. This development comes amid concerns from Trump critics that the country is getting closer to an worldwide trade war on multiple fronts.

It follows Brussels decision to retaliate against Mr Trump's tariffs.

These European Union tariffs against specific US products was meant as retaliation for Trump's imposition of tariffs against steel and aluminum imports from the European Union. The levy on Harley-Davidson bikes has increased to 31% from 6%, the company said. We are opening up closed markets and expanding our footprint.

Interestingly, reports from India had speculated that it, too, would impose tariffs on U.S. motorcycles, but as of press time those additional tariffs had not actually been levied. "In the end it will all even out - and it won't take very long!"

In another tweet, Trump said the company could face a "big tax".

"I fought hard for them and ultimately they will not pay tariffs selling into the European Union, which has hurt us badly on trade, down $151 Billion", Trump continued. The European Union's decision to place tariffs on various USA products was in retaliation to the Trump administration's move to impose tariffs on all European steel and aluminum imports to the U.S. As the European Union is Harley-Davidson's second-largest market, accounting for almost 40,000 motorcycle sales in 2017 alone, it is a market the company clearly does not want to lose.

"It believes that works out to be about $2,200 (£1,650) per bike it exports from the United States to the EU".
