US, North Korea officials in final summit preparations

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Kim Jong Un

The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

Even after touching down in Singapore, it was clear that the trade disputes with USA allies in Quebec continued to rankle Trump.

Trump was greeted by Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.Asked by a reporter how he felt about the summit, Trump said: "Very good".

Kim and Trump both arrived in Singapore a few hours apart on Sunday.

"Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!" Trump travelled to Singapore from Canada, where he attended a meeting with other world leaders.

The jet landed at the airport Sunday afternoon amid huge security precautions on the city-state island.

It is an extraordinary turnaround from the rhetoric of previous year, when Trump threatened the North with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged U.S. dotard".

Trump's high-risk meeting with Kim is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, or 9 p.m. June 11 on the U.S. East Coast.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

Last year, the North made one of the biggest breakthroughs in its missile and nuclear weapons programs - which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a USA invasion - when it announced that it had "completed" its state nuclear program after testing a missile capable of striking most, if not all, of the continental U.S.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the U.S. and the North.

At the table, Trump told his hosts: "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I just think it's going to work out very nicely".

The bodyguards were glimpsed flanking Kim's Mercedes-Benz limousine as it traveled to the St. Regis Hotel in Singapore on Sunday.

The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists who have converged on Singapore, and by gawkers around the world, up until he shakes hands with Trump on Tuesday.

Washington is demanding the "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearization of the North, while Pyongyang has so far only made public pledges of its commitment to the denuclearization of the peninsula - a term open to various interpretations - while seeking security assurances in return. The media reports Monday follow months of only the scantest of coverage of the plans for Kim to meet Trump, though his summits with South Korea's President Moon Jae-in and China's President Xi Jinping received major coverage soon after they had ended.

On Monday, North Korean state media said Kim and Trump would discuss a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism" on the Korean peninsula, denuclearisation of the peninsula and other issues of mutual concern.

The talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know-you session.

The two were North Korean media workers waiting to capture images of their leader, who all North Koreans are duty bound to revere, arriving for a historic summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.
