Century's longest 'Blood Moon' eclipse to start shortly

People gather in the sunset to await the rising of the blood min Berlin Germany

During the phenomenon, the moon appears red as it is illuminated by sunlight filtered through the Earth's atmosphere, hence the term "blood moon".

The July 27, 2018, lunar eclipse will put the moon fully in Earth's shadow for 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 57 seconds.

A Total Lunar Eclipse will turn the moon Blood red as it travels through the Earth's shadow.

During a regular supermoon, the full moon appears up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual.

At 12.19am, the moon will be out of the earth's umbral shadow and the observable eclipse will be over.

The Moon will pass right through the centre of the Earth's shadow, at the shadow's widest point.

Will the blood moon be visible in the United Kingdom?

Millions of Americans watched the first solar eclipse visible from the US since 1979 last August.

"In the USA, the lunar eclipse will start around 1:14 p.m. ET, and the maximum period of totality will start around 4:21 p.m. ET, making it too light outside for the blood moon to be visible", Noah Petro, a scientist for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, told ABC News.

There's going to be quite a show going on in Space on Friday night as a total lunar eclipse and Mars get together in the night sky.

Whatever your favored explanation, it's happening this month and it'll last for a whopping 1 hour and 43 minutes. The next lunar eclipse of such a length is due in 2123.

Also in the celestial mix, Mars will be in opposition on Friday - meaning it and the sun will be on opposite sides of Earth on the same day as the total lunar eclipse.

If you miss this lunar eclipse you will have to wait until January 21, 2019 to see another one.

The moon started turning red about 4:30am AEST Saturday morning. Only red light makes it through the atmosphere.

In India, people believe that one should not consume food during the lunar eclipse as many have religious beliefs while some have scientific believes.

Those in Australia's west, where alarms were set from 2am, got to see the end of the eclipse's totality, he said.

Rare lunar events like these are something to look forward to now, but you can imagine that they were pretty spooky spectacles in the old days. It will also be almost three times brighter than Sirius - the brightest star in the night sky.

"That's the special thing about this one, and why it's such an unusual one, and translates into it being the longest possible lunar eclipse".
